Flat bottoms go shallow and stay stable. V-bottoms ride smoother in waves. A modified-V tries to do both.

If you are buying a first small fishing boat, the hull shape matters more than almost any feature. Jon boats, V-hulls and modified-V hulls each suit different water.

Jon boats

Discover Boating describes the jon boat as a flat or nearly flat-bottomed boat with a squared bow, prized for shallow draft, calm-water stability and low cost. That makes it a natural fit for duck hunting, small ponds, creeks and slow rivers. The tradeoff is ride: in wind and waves a flat bottom slaps and throws spray.

V-hulls

A V-shaped bottom cuts through waves, so the ride is smoother and drier on choppy or open water. It draws more water and usually needs more power to plane, which pushes up the cost.

Modified-V: the middle ground

A modified-V combines a sharper entry at the bow for chop with a flatter aft section for stability and shallow running. It is the most common choice for lake anglers; boats such as 17-foot Mod-V bass boats from major aluminum builders are examples.

FAQ

Can a jon boat handle a big lake?

On calm days, yes, but a flat bottom rides rough in wind and chop. A modified-V or V-hull is the safer choice for larger water.

What is a modified-V hull?

A hull with a sharper V at the bow and a flatter section toward the stern, balancing chop handling with stability and shallow draft.
