Two of the best-known names in welded aluminum fishing boats. The biggest differences are in warranty and how each sells its packages.

Tracker and Lowe both build all-welded aluminum Mod-V fishing boats for bass, crappie and walleye anglers, and both rig with Mercury outboards. If you are cross-shopping a 17-foot boat, here is what the manufacturers themselves publish.

Tracker’s published “5+Life” warranty covers components such as electrical, livewells, stereo, gauges, seats and fuel system for five years, and the hull, ribs, transom, welds and decking for life while the original owner keeps the boat. Lowe publishes a limited lifetime warranty on hulls and plywood decking with a three-year limited component warranty, transferable to a second owner. Note that Tracker’s small Grizzly jon boats use a separate 3-year structural warranty.

Buying experience

Tracker publishes one national price for each motor package, so the number on the website is the number at the store, plus prep and freight. Lowe uses a build-and-price tool and dealers quote the final package. If you like negotiating, Lowe gives you room; if you hate it, Tracker removes it.

Tracker

Pros
  • Longer 5-year component warranty
  • Transparent national package pricing
  • Boat, motor and trailer packaged
Cons
  • Less room to negotiate
  • Engine packages fixed per model

Lowe

Pros
  • Wider horsepower range on Stinger 175C
  • Flexible build-and-price options
  • Lifetime hull and deck coverage
Cons
  • Shorter 3-year component warranty
  • Final price depends on dealer

Not ready for a 17-footer?

Many anglers start smaller: a jon boat or a mini bass boat costs far less, tows behind almost anything, and reaches water a bigger boat can’t.
